The Livelihood Food Security Programme (LFSP) mainstreamed gender in all its programme components based on a strategy that clearly mapped out the gender issues in agricultural value chains for smallholder farmers using the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) Methodology. Activities included equipping farmers with analytical tools to map their own household decisions in production and marketing as well as develop action plans for addressing gender barriers. Household level discussions were reinforced by Community Action Learning through dialogues, Transformative Leadership training and gender messaging. The approach used Gender Champions as peer trainers cascading training and gender information reaching 114 000 other farmers. Using the gender domains in the Women Empowerment Agricultural Index (WEAI), the LFSP has been tracking and measuring gender indicators registering remarkable results
